Trump lost. Iran won. We will all pay the price.

Trump lost the war.

We don’t know all there is to know, agreed. But, of what we do know, it is clear that Iran has prevailed in its war with Donald Trump’s America.

  • remove the Ayatollahs and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from power

  • persuade Iranians to rise up and take control of their country

  • eliminate Iran's nuclear weapons capacity

  • end Iran's support for terror around the globe

  • create stability in the Middle East

None of those things have happened. None.

Its homicidal regime is intact, dominated by the IRGC, which is a designated terrorist entity in Canada and the West.  The Iranian regime is now even more hardline than before.

It is getting de facto control of the Strait of Hormuz and has been transformed into regional superpower. The oil-rich Gulf states are now quietly make overtures to post-war Iran, and moving away from Washington’s orbit of influence.

Iran gets to keep its weapons-grade uranium, the future of its nuclear weapons program put off to some ill-defined negotiation over the next sixty days. By contrast, Obama’s JCPOA eliminated 97 per cent of the Iranian uranium stockpile, and took nearly two years to conclude - a more realistic timeline.

Finally, Iran gets to keep its proxy armies in Hamas and Hezbollah - with the latter still bombarding Israel’s North as we speak. Worse: Trump has taken to publicly cursing at Israel’s duly-elected Prime Minister, calling him names and demanding that Israel refrain from responding to Hezbollah attacks.

This "deal" is an unmitigated fiasco. Not just for Israel, but for the world. And it will take years to repair the damage.

How did we get here? The reasons are multiple. But the main reason is this: Iran plays the long game. They have done to Trump what they did to Jimmy Carter.
