The morning after the big blue wave

Where did they go?

The 77 million Americans who voted for Donald Trump just two short years ago: where did they go?

Last night, as the mid-term election results rolled in, it was pretty hard to locate those 77 million Trumpkins, just about anywhere. It was like no one had voted for Trump or the Republicans two years ago, at all.

Ten years ago, of course, it was a different story. Ten years ago, almost as many American voters handed the failed real estate tycoon the keys to the White House, mainly on the strength of a dumb reality TV show. Biblical-level disaster ensued, with a mismanaged Biblical-style plague as an added bonus. Americans have learned their lesson, we thought.

Think again. A few years later - knowing what first-term Trump was like, knowing that Trump was going to keep being Trump, except worse - 77 million Americans gave him his old job back. Chaos and madness ensued.

The definition of insanity, goes the saying, is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result. By that measure, 77 million Americans are clinically insane. I mean, what did they expect? Hire a clown twice, you get a circus, twice. Everyone knows that one, too.

Except Americans, apparently, who are this morning now celebrating the dawn of benevolent Democratic Party hegemony. The way they are now going on (and on) about democracy and the rule of law, you can forgive yourself for forgetting that many of the celebrants voted for Trump in 2016 and 2024.

But they did, they did. And that is why Canadians - and everyone else, everywhere - need to be very, very cautious about celebrating The Return of Sanity Down South. Because, while the Mango Mussolini will be long gone in a couple of years, those 77 million Americans? They’ll still be here.

Nothing in politics is permanent, in other words. No matter what superlatives you attach to it - a blue wave, a blue tsunami, a blue earthquake - the Democrats’ big night could look very different two years’ hence.

Besides, no red-blooded Canadian should be applauding the Americans for remembering that a racist, fascistic kleptocracy is never a good idea. They don’t deserve credit for being normal. They should’ve been normal all along, for the love of God.
