GIRLS AND HOCKEY

As a Dad to a girl hockey player - and one who played at Leaside - I can tell you this story is totally, totally true. In Toronto, discrimination in respect of ice time for girls is rampant.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but David Miller deserves credit for this move.

The story:

Girls Hockey Complaint

TORONTO - Mayor David Miller says he is willing to move some male hockey leagues and even teams in the G-T-H-L out of publicly owned arenas or to different time slots to accommodate girls hockey.

Miller made the move after the 900-member Leaside Girls Hockey Association threatened to launch a human rights complaint over what it says is the city's failure to enforce its equity policy.

Miller also calls the ``lack of action'' in equity compliance at three arenas (North Toronto Memorial, Larry Grossman Forest Hill Memorial and Leaside Memorial Gardens) ``unacceptable.''

The association says the arenas shut girls out of prime-time ice and instead rent it to adult men for hockey.

The association says their not-for-profit league spent more than 1 (m) million dollars in the past five years to play in expensive private arenas because city facilities regularly refuse to give them the ice time.
