Yes, I am channeling Lord Denning, but I am indeed pumped. Vancouver in May! It doesn't get any better than that. I plan to buy a number of Kwakiutl (or Kwakwaka'wakw) masks at Hill's, among other things.
I'm pretty confident we're going to come out of Vancouver with a winning candidate, and a party that will be election-ready. There is a whole lot of stuff that is going on behind the scenes at the moment that is very encouraging. The party president, Doug Ferguson, is an impressive guy. He and the other party officials are on the right track.
As I've said before, I believe the Liberal Party of Canada is going to win the next election (and, to prove it isn't just spin, Gord Tulk and I have a thousand-dollar bet riding on the outcome - for charity).
Governments defeat themselves - and this one will be defeated by governing during a recession (you can't win, in fact, if you do); by the distrust with which women, young people and new Canadians still regard it; and by a Liberal Party that will have used its time in Opposition (as we did in 1990-1993) to improve itself in respect of leadership, its candidates, its policies, and its fundraising.
I'm getting pretty close to identifying the candidate I plan to support. Along with all of the credentials I've mentioned before - knowing how to fundraise, knowing how to balance the books, knowing how to bring the party back to the centre - I've added another: knowing how to persuade formerly fierce combatants (even me!) in the Chrétien-Martin wars to work together, in common cause.
And there is only one candidate who can do that, as you shall see - and long before Vancouver, too.
