YOUR MOVE, MR. MARTIN

So Liberal MP Keith Martin now has a choice to make, it appears. In this CP story, Stephane Dion has clearly said no to Martin's plan to gut the Canadian Human Rights Act. Good.

...

"...Liberal Leader Stephane Dion's office disavowed the motion and suggested Martin will be asked to withdraw it.

"This is not the position of the Liberal Party of Canada or the Liberal caucus or Mr. Dion," said spokeswoman Leslie Swartman.

"We support the Canadian Human Rights Act and will not entertain changes to it such as this..."

...

Martin, meanwhile, says this:

...

"...Martin said he won't back down, arguing that it's his right and duty as a parliamentarian to introduce private member's bills that address issues of importance to his constituents."

...

True enough - although some of his constituents might also say they voted for a party's candidate, and not simply a solipsistic oddball who adheres to his party's platform only when it suits him. Then again, Keith Martin has been a Reformer, a Canadian Alliance candidate, an independent, and now he's allegedly a Liberal. If he decides to run under yet another party's banner in the next election, good luck to him. He'll need it.

Perhaps his newest aficionados can help him out on that. But I kind of doubt it.
